What is Laser Hair Removal?

After shaving unwanted hair, many people find that stubble creeps back in a matter of days. In addition to the inconvenience of frequent shaving, it can also leave behind uncomfortable bumps and ingrown hairs. Waxing can offer longer-lasting results but with some discomfort and the risk of burns. For these reasons laser hair removal has become increasingly popular and with a few treatments, you can achieve long-lasting hair removal anywhere on the body.

Our therapist, Natalie Montgomery, is an experienced provider of laser hair removal at our state-of-the-art Umi Clinic in Petersfield. We offer laser hair removal to clients from Guildford and Godalming in Surrey to Havant in Hampshire.

Laser Hair Removal FAQs
What happens during laser hair removal treatment?

Laser hair removal is a relatively fast and painless procedure. First you shave the unwanted hair a day or two before treatment, which increases the safety and effectiveness of the laser. We can apply numbing cream prior to treatment for maximum comfort and you will wear eye protection. We then pass the handheld laser device over your skin which will deliver pulses of laser energy that heat the hair follicles. We can adjust the intensity of the laser depending on your needs and skin sensitivity. The procedure may take as little as a few minutes, however this depends on the size and number of treatment areas.

How long will the effects of laser hair removal last?

In most cases laser treatment is very effective in reducing body hair. For the majority of clients up to 70% hair reduction can be seen following 6 to 8 treatment sessions. Hair growth and thickness is individual, and results can differ from person to person. In addition, hair growth impacts the effectiveness of the treatment as laser hair removal is most successful when the hair follicle is in a growth stage. Unfortunately, you cannot tell when the follicle is at this stage. Therefore, it may take more sessions to achieve your desired hair reduction goals. For most clients we recommend 8 sessions with annual top-ups, depending on the area treated.

Is laser hair removal treatment painful?

Most clients say laser hair removal feels like a sharp snap against the skin and can be uncomfortable but not painful. Levels of discomfort depend on the area being treated, the density of hairs and also your personal pain threshold. We can use an anaesthetic gel prior to using the laser to minimise any discomfort.

Are there any side effects to laser hair removal?

No downtime is required after laser hair removal. Some patients experience temporary discomfort, such as redness and mild swelling which can feel similar to sunburn. This should subside after a few days and you can use cold compresses and lotion to soothe the area. Your skin will be more sensitive after laser treatment so it is essential to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen at all times.
