Why have Orthodontic treatment at Umi Clinic?

  • Our specialist orthodontist has significantly more experience and training than a general dentist and sees patients who require a range of treatment from simple cosmetic improvements to complex, challenging cases.
  • We offer all the latest teeth straightening options from Invisalign clear aligners to fixed Damon braces and during your consultation our orthodontist will recommend the most suitable brace type for your problem.
  • Orthodontic treatment can help boost self-confidence by creating a beautiful smile. Many patients find themselves smiling more, showing their teeth in photographs and generally feeling better about themselves, following treatment.
  • Straighter teeth can make it easier to help keep the teeth and gums clean and so reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Orthodontic treatment can create a better bite and so help maintain your natural teeth for longer and in some cases, help prevent further wear of your teeth.
ORTHODONTICS FAQS
What is a specialist orthodontist?

A specialist orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Your orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile.

What is the best age to visit the orthodontist?

If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age is the best age to see an orthodontist. The British Orthodontic Society recommends children can have an orthodontic assessment around the age of 8 as at this age an orthodontist can detect developing problems and determine whether your child could benefit from early intervention. Children usually start treatment when most or all of their adult teeth have fully developed. Typically, this happens around the age of 12, but there is a lot of variation amongst children.

However, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teenagers, as more and more adults are seeking treatment to improve their smile. Whether you are considering treatment for yourself or for your child, visit us at Umi Clinic.

What are the benefits of orthodontics?

While orthodontic treatment requires commitment, patients are rewarded with healthy straight teeth, proper jaw alignment and a beautiful smile that can increase self-confidence at any age. Crooked and crowded teeth are difficult to clean and can result in tooth decay and gum disease. If left untreated, mis-aligned teeth can lead to an improper bite, tooth wear and tooth injury. Crooked teeth can also make you self-conscious and less likely to smile in photographs or social situation.

It is well-known that improvements in personal appearance contribute to greater mental well-being. Creating a beautiful smile through orthodontics is a reliable way of improving the health of your teeth as well as your self-esteem.

Will I have to wear retainers following my orthodontic treatment?

After your orthodontic treatment is completed, retainers will need to be worn. Retainers can be removable or fixed to your teeth and sometimes you will be given both types. Removable retainers should be worn every night for the first year and then according to you orthodontist’s instructions as teeth will continue to move all of your life. Without proper retention your lovely new smile is unlikely to stay in place. With fixed retainers, again you should expect to have them in place permanently or for as long as possible.

How long will orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time with aligners or braces typically ranges from six months to two years, but a few cases fall outside this range. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the problem, the individual biological response to the brace, the growth of the patient’s mouth and face, and also importantly, the cooperation of the patient. Patient compliance with the orthodontist’s instructions is essential to completing treatment successfully and on time. Can I have an invisible brace as I do not want my treatment to be obvious?

Modern orthodontic treatments mean you do not necessarily need to wear fixed metal ‘train-track’ type braces. Invisalign clear aligners are barely visible and most people won’t notice you have them in. Damon clear fixed braces are also not very noticeable as the brackets are clear or tooth coloured. Our specialist orthodontist at Umi Clinic will be able to advise on the most suitable brace type for your orthodontic treatment.

Do orthodontic braces and aligners hurt?

Fixed braces do not often hurt, however you may feel some discomfort for a couple days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth get used to your new braces and following each adjustment. Some patients report minor discomfort when using Invisalign aligners, specifically at the beginning of treatment, as they adjust to wearing aligners all day. In both cases any discomfort is temporary and can be helped with over-the-counter pain-killers.
